Hurst Golf Club, Tile Hill, West Midlands. (1906 - WW1)

The club was founded in 1906.

The professional from 1909 to 1916 was F James.

In January 1908, after being in existence for a little over twelve months, the Hurst Golf Club held their first annual dinner dinner. It took place at the King's Head Hotel and was attended by about 60 members and friends, presided over by Mr H C Church. During his speech he paid special thanks to Mr A C Tunley, the secretary, saying that it was through his hard work that the club had attracted new members and had such a good golf course.

It was reported that on Saturday 31 May 1913 Harry Vardon set a record of 34 for the "new" nine-hole course. A medal competition was played over 18-holes, scores as follows; Harry Vardon (South Herts), 72; Ted Ray (Oxhey), 72; Tom Williamson (Notts), 74; J Bloxham (Leamington), 76.

The foursomes, which followed the above singles, were halved.

The competition for the 36 hole Committee Bowl took place on the 19 June 1915. The course was in excellent condition with very fast greens. It was stated that R H Booth (not yet 16) was developing into a fine player, his handicap was seven. F James, the professional, was also in good form. Leading scores; A S Harris, 101-26-75 and 103-26-77; A Hacking, 102-27-75 and 106-27-79; R H Whelan, 108-30-78 and 108-30-78; H Whetton, 121-30-91 and 103-30-73; R Robson, 102-17-85 and 100-17-83.

A sad note to finish. In March 1921 four famous golfers of the day; Ted Ray, Harry Vardon, J H Taylor and James Braid, played an exhibition match over the Moseley golf course. They gave their services to help a fellow professional who, in the great war, lost both legs as a result of being hit by a German shell in November 1918. Frank James, the professional at Hurst Golf Club before the war, was the victim.

Hurst Golf Club did not survive WW1.
