Chipping Norton Golf Club, Oxfordshire. (1890 - 1907)

Founded 1890, the first course was on Chipping Norton Common, it moved to its present location in 1907.

The professional’s in the early years of the club were; A Finch, 1890/92; William Woodward, 1892/94; W G Saunders, 1905/08.

The home of Mr A W S Hitchman at Monkdene was the meeting place to discuss the possibility of a club for Chipping Norton. The Field Reeves had kindly consented to the Common being used for the course. At the meeting Dr G Wright Hutcinson accepted the Presidency of the club. At this time there were about 20 gents as members, but they were confident that this number would grow. Report Below.

The course was in good condition for the competition for the President's prizes which was played on Saturday 20 September 1890; A W S Hitchman, 106-8-98; A Mackenzie, 101 scratch; Rev. A E Rose, 190-6-103; F F Walker, 112-4-108; C G Rowell, 117-6-111; H L Bliss, 120-8-112; Rev. G A Littledale, 125-12-113; Austin Webb, 130-12-118; R Lawton, 136-14-122. 

From The Golfing Annual Vol. V 1891-92:-

"Instituted 11 March 1890. The green is situated quite close to Chipping Norton Station on the Banbury and Cheltenham Railway. There is capital accommodation for visitors at the White Hart and Crown Hotels. The kennels of the Heythrop Hounds are at Chipping Norton, and it is also within hunting distance of the Bicester and Warwickshire packs."

The following is from the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; Instituted 1890; Membership of 25; Hon. secretary - G Gordon Sharp, Westbourne House, Chipping Norton; Entrance Fee nil and Subs 10s, ladies 5s; Nine-holes; Professional, A Sa(u)nders; Amateur Record - J Arkhill and A Pettipher, both 43; Terms for visitors, two days free, afterwards 8s/6d a week. The course is over pastureland and is playable from September 1st till the end of April. The total length is 2,065 yards and the longest hole 375 yards, while the shortest is 132 yards.
