Thanks to Duncan Cheslett for his contribution on the short history of Moorend Golf Course.

"Not the most distinguished course; indeed it was built by the farmer on whose land it lay one summer in the early 1990s. With the aid of his tractor and mower it was  immediately opened for business. This coincided with the Tiger Woods phenomenon and for a number of years queues formed on weekend mornings of aspiring golfers who were financially or socially excluded from the more established and over-subscribed local golf clubs.

The game is now very different with many of the longer established clubs now offering the "all welcome" policy with tee-off  times offered at a tenner a round, joining fees have largely disappeared, and discounts on annual subscriptions for new members often prevail.  There is no market need for very basic facilities such as Moorend.

The final straw came with the extension of the Manchester Airport Eastern Link Road, which is currently being built across the edge of the course. The operator of the driving range at Moorend (it is leased from the owner of the course) expressed interest in remodelling the course – maybe as a par 3 facility – but those plans appear to have been shelved.

Moorend will be remembered fondly as a way into the game for a generation of golfers, many of whom now form the backbone of local clubs."
