Royal Engineers Golf Club, Chatham, Kent. (1887 - 1905)

Founded 1887.

The professional from 1889 to 1891 was J Tolmie.

From the Golfing Annual 1888/89;_

"Royal Engineers' Golf Club; Instituted September 1887; Entrance Fee, 10 shillings; Monthly subscription, 2s/6d; Membership of 88; Captain, Major A T Preston; Committee - Major Preston, Captain Dumbleton, Captain Hawkins, L H Broke, L F de Loyd; Secretary - Captain H N Dumbleton, St Mary's Barracks, Chatham; Home Green, St Mary's Chatham; Green-keeper, W Bennet.

There are no club prizes at present, only weekly handicaps being held. These are played over 18-holes, the first six being played twice to make up the required number.

The lowest scratch score is 83, made by Captain Dumbleton in the weekly handicap on 18 November 1887.

The links are situated round St Mary's Barracks, and at present consist of twelve holes. The longest hole is 475 yards, and the shortest 120 yards. Length of round, one and two-thirds miles. Since last year, three new holes have been added to the course, all of a highly sporting character. The hazards are banks and ditches, portions of old fortifications, a railway embankment, a large gravel pit, and a good deal of rough ground on either side of the course. There is only one hole on the course that does not require careful play to avoid the hazards, which are calculated to severely punish the unwary golfer. The lies on the course are anything but perfect, but they are improving, as are the greens. A new clubhouse has just been opened."

The new course of nine-holes is over much the same ground as the old one of twelve, and is still a very sporting one, but the putting greens and lies are much improved. The longest hole is 475 yards and the shortest 120 yards, and the whole round a mile and half in length."

The following is taken from the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; This club has ceased to exist, owing to the land on which the course was laid out having been handed over to the Admiralty for building purposes. It is contemplated to form a United Services Golf Club on Government land about two miles east of Chatham.
