Richmond Golf Club, Deer Park Course, London. (1891)

Originally a nine-hole course laid out in the Deer Park by Tom Dunn. It was only at this location for a short time, it moved to its current location at Sudbrook Park in summer 1891.

Extract from a report on the Deer Park golf course from the Surrey Comet Saturday 28 February 1891; “RICHMOND GOLF CLUB – A meeting of members of this newly formed club was held on Monday evening at the Greyhound Hotel, Richmond. Owing to the dense fog that prevailed, and the consequent lateness of trains from the city, there was only a small attendance. Mr C W Alcock being voted to the chair, said that the provisional committee had had a great many consultations with Mr Fuller, and he thought he would be justified in saying that they found the Old Deer Park much more adaptable for golf than they expected. Tom Dunn had very kindly arranged the links, and he was present and would tell them what he thought about the ground. A rough plan of the ground was then shown, and Dunn said he thought the ground was large enough for from twenty to twenty five couples, which he thought was as many as there would be playing on it at one time. As the club increased they could acquire more ground. Mr Cowper (hon. sec.) read the report of the provisional committee which stated that - The committee, in accordance with instructions, have proceeded to make arrangements for commencing play at the earliest possible date; that a good; that a good course of nine-holes has been marked out by Tom Dunn, the well known professional, in the Deer Park; and that several men are already at work mowing and rolling the “Greens” will be in sufficiently good condition to commence play within a fortnight. The committee regret that they have not succeeded in obtaining a definite offer for annual tenancy, and it is as yet uncertain whether arrangements can be made for play during the summer months. They are glad, however, to announce definitely that the club will be able to use the links up to the 15 April (instead of 31 March only, the date named at the last meeting); They recommended the following arrangements with regard to the amount of subscriptions – The annual subscriptions to be two guineas, except in the case of “original members” for whom it shall be one guinea. In answer to questions it was stated that for the present it was proposed that members should use the pavilion of the Richmond A.A., and that up to that meeting the hon. sec., had in his book the names of 101 members. The meeting proceeded with the election of officers, the following being chosen; Captain, Sir Henry Pottinger; hon. treasurer, S F Higgins; hon. secretary, Charles Cowper; committee – C W Alcock, W B Dick, M Hill, Dr. Williamson, R S Whalley, Dr. Gardiner, hon. Ivo Bligh. T Skewes Cox and Edwin Ash were appointed auditors, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to C W Alcock and other gentlemen who acted with him in promoting the formation of a golf club in the Old Deer Park. It was stated that in all probability the links would be open for play by next Saturday.”
