From its inception in 1865 Royal Wimbledon Golf Club amicably shared the course with the London Scottish Golf Club club until the newly formed Wimbledon Town Golf Club made it a "three club course" in 1907. With the added congestion this created the Royal Wimbledon decided to go it alone and moved to their own course on land adjoining the Common in 1907.

Wimbledon Ladies' Golf Club was founded in 1872 and had their own nine-hole course until the outbreak of WW1. The professional from 1894 to 1908 was W Frost.
