Clovelly Court Golf Course, Devon. (1909)

Mention of a private course at Clovelly Court in June 1909. Mr Asquith, the Prime Minister, was visiting the area and enjoying a game on the course when he was approached by two Suffragettes. They seized him by the arm, but only had time for a word or two before the police moved in. The Prime Minister said to the constables “Take these women away; I refuse to speak to them”. The movement was very active at this time and golf courses in particular were amongst the favoured targets for vandalism. Full report below.
