Belmullet Golf Club, County Mayo.

The club was founded in 1925.

The early nine-hole seaside links course was situated at Cross, Binghamstown. The president was Cannon J J Hegarty and the captain J A O’Donaghue. Visitors’ fees were 1/6 a round.

In the early 1930s the Golfer’s Handbook listed the secretary as J J Hegarty and the green-keeper P McAndrew. Nine-hole course record was held by George Reilly, 40. Club membership of 37. Railway station at Mallarany. Visitors’ fees 1s a day, 4s a week. Sunday play allowed. Hotels; “Erris” “Royal.”

Due to a decline in membership in 1934 the club almost folded when it was unable to pay the rent. Discussions took place with the land owner and a compromise was reached, the rent was set at £15 a year.

In the 1940s the secretary was J J Cronin and the green-keeper P McAndrew. The nine-hole course had a Par and SSS of 36. Course records; amateur, Miss A Sweeney, 37; professional, J Glynn, 37. The station at Belmullet was one and a half miles. Visitors’ fees, 1s/6d a day, 4s a week.

In 1955/7 the secretary was M Reilly, Main Street, Belmullet. Membership, 50.

In the 1960s the secretary was P Lavelle, Main Street, Belmullet. Membership 30.

In the 1970s the secretary was R Triggs. Membership, 22. Visitors’ fees, 25p a day, 50p at weekend.

In the 1980s the secretary was M Dillon. Membership, 35. Visitors’ fees £2 a day. Three miles west of  Belmullet.

In the last year at Cross in 1991 the hon. secretary was K Donnelly. The Belmullet club had a membership of 70.  The nine-holes measured 2,829 yards with a SSS of 67. Visitors’ fees were £3 a day, £14 at weekend.  

The Carne club moved to its current location in 1992.
