Gorey Golf Club, County Wexford. (1894 - WW2)

The early Golf Club at Gorey, dating from 1894, was called the Newborough Golf Club and played on a nine-hole course.

The Gorey Golf Club was founded in 1905. The nine-hole course was laid out on Creagh Hill with views of the Irish Sea.  

The following article is from The Irish Times January 15th 1898. “On Thursday last (gentlemen’s competition day) a very exciting match took place on the above links. The light was fading as the last green was reached and Mr Tuke was declared the winner. The tired competitors were then entertained to a nost enjoyable tea given by Mrs Turner of Clonattin.”

From the Belfast News-Letter Monday 4th April 1898. “Woodenbridge Golf Club met Newborough Golf Club in a return match on Saturday on the green of the former, when the home team won easily by 21 holes.”

The club is listed in The Golfing Annual 1898/9 with an Institution date of 1894. Miss M E Guise, Gorey, was hon. secretary. The course was of nine-holes.

The club continued to be listed (name only) in the Golfing Annual in the early 1900s. 

By 1905 Newborough Golf Club had ceased to exist and the Gorey Golf Club appears.

The club had an entry in the 1910 Irish Golfer Golfers Guide stating that “a course exists for local residents.”

In 1914 the secretary was M J Cooke, Gorey, Co Wexford. In what must be one of the first occasions in Ireland a lady by the name of Mrs E A L Turner was appointed captain of the club. The entrance fee was £1/1/0 and subs £1.Visitors were welcome and Sunday play was allowed with caddies.

In 1916 the club captain was Dr James Dwyer.

The course was required for agricultural use during WW1 and the club went into abeyance.

The club reformed in 1923 when the secretary was Dr Dwyer. Visitors’ fees were 1/- a day and 5/- a week.

In 1924 there were joint secretaries, W Bates and W P Hargrove, telephone 2. The green-keeper was H Nolan. Membership was 150 and visitors’ fees were now 2/6.

The course reopens in March 1924.

In June 1925 the ladies team travelled to Woodenbridge Golf Club where they played a six a side match, the visitors were beaten by one match, Gorey team; Mrs Nolans, Mrs W P Hargroves, Mrs Harvey, Miss Reynolds, Miss Brickenden and Mrs Contillon.  

In 1927 the secretary was Mr W T Williamson. There was a two room clubhouse “on land adjoining the picturesque residence of Mrs Lea Wilson.

From the late 1920s to its closure in the late 1930s the secretary was J J Wrixon, Main Street, Gorey and the green-keeper M Sunderland. A 9-hole course with a club membership of 120. Visitors’ fees 2/- a day and Sunday play was allowed without caddies. The station at Gorey was 5 minutes away. Local hotel was the Railway.
