Strathaven Golf Club, Lanarkshire. (1897 - 1907)
The original course was opened on Saturday the 3rd July 1897.
The following article is from the Glasgow Herald dated 5th July 1897 “The new golf links at Strahaven were formally opened on Saturday afternoon, although the weather was not altogether satisfactory, there being a strong wind blowing with occasional showers, there was a large and influential number of people present. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr George Millar, Dunavan, who was presented with a silver-mounted club by Mr James Barrie, president, on behalf of the members. The links extend over 40 acres of ground, and are situated on the farm of Brownmuir, near to Glassford Station. With its hazards of old workings, quarries etc it is an ideal and natural golf course. The turf is short and spongy, affording good “lies” On Saturday an exhibition game was played between Mr Robb, Glasgow, and Mr McCutcheon, Lanark”
The articles below are from the Evening Times 9th July 1897.
Below is the result of the first club match played by Strathaven Golf Club. It was against Motherwell Golf Club in October 1898.
The club continued at Brownmuir for about ten years, but with its rather remote location it became apparent that a new site nearer the town would be more appealing to the golfers.
The current club was founded in 1907.
