Kincraig Golf Club, Highland. (1907 - 1950s)

The nine-hole course was opened in 1907.

The course was very little played on in the early years by the locals, the membership, just 20 in 1914. Visitors to the area added much needed support during the summer months.

The membership peaked at 60 in the 1930s, reducing to 30 by closure. The amateur course record was held by F MacBain who scored 68 in the mid 1930s and 65 in the 1950s. Sunday play was not allowed. Local advertised hotel was the Suie. The station was 5 minutes from the course.

The course was opened for the season on Saturday 6 July 1907 by Mr Macpherson, Balavil. The first ball was driven off by Mrs Macpherson. The course, which was opened the year before, had improved greatly with the greens being “very true”. A 36-hole competition was played in August 1912. The winners was the Rev J M Kay (24) and A Robertson (plus2), tied on 160.

In 1914 there was no entry fee. Subs for gents were 3/6d and ladies 2/6d. Visitors’ fees were 1/-day, 2/6d a week and 5/- a month.

In 1923 there was a Membership of 40. Fees were 30/- for the season. In July the following members qualified for a gold medal presented by Miss Hay, Ardinsh, Kincraig; A Robertson, sen; James MacKintosh; James MacBain; L MacKintosh; A Robertson, jun; Clarence Annand. In the final of a competition for girls under 18 for prizes given by Miss Grant the winner was Miss Jane Robertson, runner-up was Miss Christina MacLennan.

A bazaar and dance was held in the Parish Church Hall in Lower Badenoch in August 1924 to raise funds for the construction of a new clubhouse. At the opening of the bazzar Mrs Mackintosh of Mackintosh, who was introduced by Mr Macpherson of Balavil, said a suitable and up-to-date clubhouse was greatly required, and it would be a great acquisition to their beautiful golf course. Mr William Smith won the monthly medal with a score of 76. In the final of the Farr Cup George Milton beat Clarence Annand by 2up.

In 1932/3 the joint secretaries were, Miss N Burnett, Alirie (Alvie?) Public School, Kincraig, and Miss J Robertson, Leaselt, Kincraig. The green-keeper was A Robertson who also held the course record of 70. The club had a membership of 50. Sunday play was not allowed.

The final of the Farr Cup was played in September 1931. It was won for the fifth time by Andrew Robertson who defeated A Gibson by 2 and 1.

In the final of the Farr Cup in July 1937 D Macpherson beat F MacBain by 2 and 1.

The Rev A Hamilton presided at the annual meeting in April 1939, the financial statement was produced and consiered satisfactory. The following officers were elected; President, Rev A Hamilton; vice-president, W Smith; joint secretaries and treasurers, Miss N Burnett and R Rait; captain, Farquhar MacBain; committee – Mrs Robertson, Rev A F Shaw, D Dunnett, D Robertson, A Macdonald, A Mackenzie. 

From 1947 to 51 visitors’ fees were; 1/6d a day and 30/- a season. Family tickets were available at reduced rates.

In 1958 Visitors paid 2/6d a day.
