Monte Mayor Golf Club, Marbella. (1989 - 2014)

The Monte Mayor club opened in 1989.

An 18-hole fantastic and challenging course, designed by José Cancedo, it was stated to be “one of the most spectacular on the Costa del Sol”

The course was set in a valley on the slopes of Monte Mayor in an area outstanding natural beauty.  The ruins of a tenth century Moorish Fort sits on the summit of Monte Mayor. Professional Alex Cejka held the course record of 66. The club professional was Harro Rijnders and the green-keeper Gonzalo Ortiz.

Signatures Holes were; the par three third measuring 165 meters from the yellow tees (193m from the white tees). Considered as one of the best par 3s on the Costa del Sol. Very intimidating, but a well struck shot slightly to the right of the pin would bring the best result.

The par five fourth hole, 419 meters (yellow) 425 meters (white). A drive, then a choice – go for the green – or lag up on to the plateau. You then crossed over a lovely rustic bridge with a glorious water-fall cascading over natural marble stone.

The par four thirteenth, 284 meters (yellow) 291 meters white). From the elevated tee there were breathtaking panoramic views over the course and to the coast.

The following is an extract from a statement that appeared on the club website in November 2011. “Sadly, Monte Mayor Golf & Country Club has been commercially closed. We want to thank you all for your sincere support.”
