Ton Pentre Golf Club, Rhonnda. (1920s - WW2)
The course was laid out in the early 1920s primarily for the mine workers.
Initially a primitive four-hole course it was eventually extended to nine-holes. The course was laid out on a section of the mountain overlooking Ton Pentre known as “Waun Ton Pentre.” The area had long been used by children to play games, particularly football.
The original clubhouse was an old barn which had no running water, it was the caddies job was to fetch water from a nearby spring to make drinks. There was no alcohol licence but lockers were provided for clubs and clothes.
Gradually membership increased and club competitions were played, matches were also arranged with local clubs. A grounds-man was taken on, the land was cleared of rough grass, the greens and tees were improved, and the course was extended to nine-holes.
Competition results from May 1923.
Its main claim to fame however was a match involving H.R.H the Duke of York played in May 1924. He was partnered by Capt. Basil V Brooke R.N against Frank Hodges M.P and Mr Evan Williams, the latter pair winning by 2 and 1.
