Wirksworth Golf Club, Derbyshire. (1927 - 1933)
The club was founded in 1927.
The club closed in 1933.
First course was at Summer Lane, later course at Hopton Lane.
The reports below on the opening of the first golf course in April 1927.
By the end of 1928 the Wirksworth Golf Club had been formed into a limited liability company and had taken a lease on land in Hopton Lane. A small clubhouse had been built and a sporting course laid-out and many new members had joined. The exact location of this course was not given.
At the annual meeting in December 1929 the report given by the secretary showed that the club had progressed and that additional land had been become available. At the start of the year there was an adverse balance of £51/17s/7d, this had been reduced to £14/1s/3d. Membership had steadily grown; September 1927 it was 73; September 1928, 85. The secretary stated that the first course at Summer Lane proved unsuitable, and other land had been acquired. The land had been surveyed by Mr T Bronte, a well known Derbyshire golfer, who had provided a very satisfactory layout. During the past few months it had become evident that it would become a very successful venture.
In January 1929 the first meeting of the “new” Wirksworth Golf Club Ltd was well and enthusiastically attended in the Town Hall. Mr F Fox presided at the meeting, and the following officers were elected; President, General Walthall; Captain and treasurer of the club, Capt J D B Symonds; Secretary Mr Harold Stanton Tebbitt; Directors, A Hatfield, A T Robinson, S H M White, G Lovegrove, E Fox, P J Haynes, I Walker and A D G Smith.
Report from the Derbyshire Times November 1932 – “About £8 was realised by a rummage sale organised by the Ladies’ Committee of the Wirksworth Golf Club Ltd. The committee comprises; Mesdames Sharp (secretary,) G Bowmer (treasurer,) J Gould, Miss Stafford.”
Below a sad end, the golf course equipment is auctioned.
The Google Map below shows Hopton Lane, the second golf course was laid out somewhere alongside this road. The exact location is still to be found.
