Nazeing Common Golf Club, Waltham Cross, Essex. (1890 - WW2)

Founded in 1890.

An 18-hole course of great variety over a common of 500 acres.

J Savage, who served as both professional and  green-keeper, was at the club before the outbreak of WW1 and continued until the club closed.

The station at Broxbourne was 3 miles away. Club cars met the London train at Broxbourne station at weekends at a charge of 2/- each way. The secretary arranged hotels for visitors if required. Local hotels were the Club Dormy House, King Harold’s Head, Sun Inn at Nazeing and the Crown at Broxbourne. Sunday play was allowed without caddies.

In 1914 there was a membership of 200. There was no entry fee. Subs for gents were £3/3/0 and ladies £1/11/6. Visitors on introduction were 2/6d a day, 10/- a week and £1 a month.

In August 1919 Nazeing entertained East Herts Golf Club, the latter winning by 5 matches to 4. In a separate game the professional of the East Herts Club, A C Monk beat J Savage, the Nazeing professional, in a 36-hole match by 3&2.

Below is the result of a ladies match played at Gog Magog in June 1920.

In 1923 course records were amateur E H Scott with a score of 73 and professional J Savage 70. Visitors’ fees on introduction were 2/6d during the week, 5/- at weekends, ladies 1/- any day, 10/- a week and £1 a month.

In 1940 and 1947 the 18-hole course had a SSS of 71. Membership now reduced to 150. Course records were amateur C F Yeomans 70, professional J Savage, with an improved score of 64. Visitors’ fees on introduction were now 2/6d a day, weekends and Bank Holidays 2/6d a round. Ladies 2/- any day and 10/- a week.

The course on Nazeing Common was requisitioned for use by the RAF in WW2. Although the club was recorded in 1947 it is probable that it did not survive the war.
