Haverhill Golf Club, Sturmer Hall Course. (1907 – 1920s)
Haverhill is in on the border of Suffolk and Essex.

From the Haverhill Echo Saturday 21 December 1907 – “The Haverhill Golf Club has not been in existence many months, but even at such an early stage they intend to extend their course by the addition of three holes. When the links at Sturmer were opened it was felt by many members that it would have been desirable to have a nine-hole course instead of six. The committee are now, with the advice of Alan Gow, now engaged in making the necessary alterations, and it is intended to be open for play during the spring. Golf is undoubtedly a healthy exercise, and though the Haverhill combination have only been in existence for a short period and there is ample evidence that they are an active body of members.”

The November 1908 monthly medal was won by Dr J R Hall Walker with a net score of 82.
The winner of the April 1909 monthly medal was H Gurteen with a net score of 85.
September 1909 competitions; Bogey – F D Unwin (bronze medal); Medal – H W Badcock, net 81.
The winner of the November 1910 monthly medal was F W Gurteen, 89-16-73, a record for the course.
In 1911 the secretary was Noel Mc Gowan.
Exhibition match played in March 1911.
The April 1911 monthly was won by J S Hill with a net 81. It was called the Haverhill and District Golf Club in this report.
In May 1911 P Hoffman defeated H Death in a competition for a spoon presented by D McGowan. The ladies’ section played for a prize presented by Mr F C Christmas. Mrs J Yardley winning from Mrs F W Gurteen.

Evening Star Monday 6 April 1914 – “The monthly medal competition was played on the Sturmer Links on Saturday, when two records were broken. J P Hoffman beat the standing record for the course of 86 strokes, and this was subsequently topped by J S Hill with 85, making his net score 68.”
The death was announced in June 1925 of Mr John Peter Hoffman of Sturmer Hall near Haverhill.
There was no further mention of the earlier Haverhill Golf Club.
