Burton-on-Trent Golf Club, Staffordshire Courses. (1894 - 1907)
Founded in 1894 the Burton club originally played on courses at Stapenhill and Branston(e).
History of the earlier Stapenhill and Branston clubs appear on separate articles on this website.
The Burton on Trent Golf Club moved from Staffordshire to its current location at Bretby, Derbyshire, in 1907.
Below history of the Burton-on-Trent Golf Club on courses at Stapenhill (1894 - 1897) and Branston (e) (1897 - 1907).
A 9-hole course of about 2,000 yards which was laid out south of Woods Lane, Stapenhill on a farm owned by Mr Wilkinson. Burton of course was, and still is, famous for brewing and a couple of the early prominent members in the development of the Burton club were associated with the brewing industry. Dr Alston was a brewery chemist and S H Evershed was a director of a local brewery. Mr H T Nadin a collier owner and E A Brown a bank manager were also pioneers of the club. The station at Burton was 1 ½ miles away, there was a tram service from the station to the course every 10 minutes. Sunday play was not allowed. Local hotels were the Queens, the Midland and the Station.

From 1899 to 1904 the secretary was Mr T Hartland. The treasurers were; R R Morley, 1899, G H Dudney, 1900, Rev G R Harrison, 1902 and W Lobb, 1904. In 1899 the entry fee was £1/1/0, subs £1/1/0, visitors’ fees were 2/6 a day. In 1904 subs were increased to £2/2/0.
On the 21 January 1899 a 36-hole match took place between Harry Vardon of Scarborough, the Open Champion, and A Lewis the local professional. Vardon won the match 6 and 5. Scores, Vardon, 76+78=154, Lewis, 84+77=161. Report below.

The following is from the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; Burton-on-Trent Golf Club; Instituted 1895; Membership of 102, ladies 35; Station at Branstone half a mile; Hon. secretary W B Briggs, The Rowans, Burton-on-Trent; Captain, H E Cherry; Entrance fee £2/2s and subs £1/10s, ladies 10s/6d; nine-holes; Professional, V Richards; Professional Record, A Lewis 72; Amateur Record, F Ballingall 72; Terms for visitors, 1s a day, 4s a week, 10s a month. The links are on pasture land with a gravel soil. The hazards consist of hedges, ditches, and sunk trenches filled with sand.

Ordnance Survey Map below is from the early 1900s, unfortunately the golf course is not marked. Beehive Farm is marked on the map and this would become the clubhouse for the Branston(e) Golf Club from 1907.
