Mount Oswald Golf Club, Durham. (1970s - 2013)
Mount Oswald was the original course of the Durham City Golf Club from 1927 to 1974. Durham left when the course was threatened with housing development in the 1970s. The owner at the time was unable to gain planning permission but the Durham City club had already decided to move to their new course. The Mount Oswald club eventually took over the course.
The club had outstanding facilities and a magnificent 18-hole golf course which was set in beautiful surroundings conveniently located near Durham City Centre.

The course was briefly listed in the 1982 Golfer’s Handbook as an 18-hole course measuring 6,048 yards with a SSS of 70.
In 1986 an 1988 it was listed as an 18-hole parkland course measuring 6,009 yards SSS of 69; secretary was G Clark; course records – amateur ; J Mee, 64 (1986); professional; J Matthews, 66 (1984); Green fees £3.50 a round, £6 a day.
In the early 1990s the secretary was S E Reeve. The club had a membership of 120.
In 2004 the course measured 5,984 yards with a SSS of 69. Visitors’ fees; £12.50 weekdays, £15 at weekend.
In 2006 the secretary was N Galvin and the professional, C Calder.
The secretary in 2012 was N Galvin.
The course finally succumbed to the Housing developers and the Mount Oswald club eventually closed on New Year’s Eve 2013.
