The text above reads – “A golf club has been formed at Murton Colliery, and has obtained a large membership. A fine nine-hole course has been secured on the pastures, and the outlook looks very promising. Mr W M Argument has been appointed secretary.”

Durham County Advertiser Friday 4 September 1914 - "A new Golf Course has been laid out on The Pastures Ground, Murton, and everything augurs well for a successful club, and already there is large membership of both sexes. The course is a nine-hole one, and is well situated and very central. On Wednesday the course was formally opened by Mr E S Wood and the Reverend G W Anson Firth in the presence of a large gathering. Tea was afterwards partaken of on the green, and a very enjoyable afternoon spent. The following are the officials; President, Dr Wright; Secretary, W Argument; Treasurer, T Platts; Captain, Rev G W Anson Firth; and a large committee."

It was reported in August 1916 that several new greens on the golf course at Murton Colliery had been opened by Mr E Seymour Wood, J.P., colliery manager.
