Newcastle Golf Club, Town Moor Course. (1880s)

The original short lived Newcastle Golf Club, Town Moor, appeared in the early 1880s.

Four clubs played on the Town Moor Course at various times; Newcastle Golf Club - (1880s); City of Newcastle Golf Club - (1891 - 1907); Newcastle United Golf Club - (1892 - 1973);  Claremont Golf Club - (1908 - 1951). The separate history of these clubs can be found on this website.

The Newcastle Golf Club is mentioned in the report below from October 1881.

From the Newcastle Journal Saturday 17 June 1882; "NEWCASTLE GOLF CLUB - Yesterday afternoon a number  of member of the club took part in a competition for the "Melville Cross" a handsome challenge trophy presented by Mr T Melville of North Shields. The Town Moor affords ampler scope for golf than does the celebrated Musselburgh Links, but, owing to the restrictions placed upon it by the Corporation and the Freemen, the splendid extent of ground cannot be so well utilised for the " Royal and Ancient" game as it could be were the members of the club left to develop it themselves. Under immense disadvantages, a sort of green, consisting of nine-holes, has been improvised, the leading spirit in the formation of it being Mr J Mitchell. It would be unfair, seeing that the club and the green as yet are in their infancy, to criticise it adversely. Suffice it to say that golf which has taken strong root in this district as an exhilarating game of skill, is played on the Town Moor daily, though it can scarcely be expected that the putting greens are as well adapted as those of older established greens. It is gratifying to see that interest is being taken in such a splendid game, and it is only to be hoped that the Newcastle Club, may be the germ of many well organised similar institutions, whose members may be brought together on the "Freemen's preserves." Yesterday's competition scores; R T Thomson, 48+3-51; Mr Snelgrove, 52 scratch; Alex. Guild, 68-13-55; W Atkinson, 72-13-59; A Deuchar, 66 scratch; P Hastie, 80-13-67; J Mitchell, 68 scratch; L Morris, 83-13-70; J Turnbull, 84-13-71; J Hedley, 80-3-77; W Turnbull, 92-13-79; E Thompson, retired."
