Morpeth Golf Club, Tranwell Course. (1906 – 1923)

The club was founded in 1906.

The earlier nine-hole course was laid out at Tranwell by George Rochester, the Alnmouth professional.

The club moved to its current location in 1923.

It was reported in April 1919 that a meeting was held in the Soldier’s Institute under the presidency of N I Wright, when arrangements were made for the reopening of the course. It was agreed that the annual subscription be 30 shillings for gentlemen and 15 shillings for ladies. 

Morpeth Herald Friday 2 January 1920 – “Notwithstanding the weather conditions prevailing on Boxing Day, a goodly number of members turned up at the Common to compete for the prizes given by County Councillor Charlton and Mr A Burn. Needless to say, the ground being as hard as a rock, the scores were high. The following were the best net scores; W Y Price, 82; S Relph, 87; J Charlton, 88; J T Watson, 91; P L Lawson, 93; J Fulthorp, 95; C Hudson, 96.”
