Haydon Bridge Golf Club, Northumberland. (1905 - WW1)

The club was founded in 1905.

The first course was at Chesterwood.

Despite the onset of WW1 the club moved to a new course at Esp Hill in May 1915. A rare "new course" at this troubled time.

It was "Lady's Day" on Thursday 16 November 1905. A handsome trophy was presented for the competition by Alderman Carrick. Scores were on the high side with Mrs Coombers 54 being the best, Miss Jackson was runner-up.

In 1906 the secretary was Nicholas Beattie, Post Office, Haydon Bridge, RSO, Northumberland. A 9-hole sporting course with plenty of natural hazards. Course records were, amateur J M Beattie with a score of 37 and professional J S Caird 37. Visitors’ fees, ladies 1/- a day, 2/6 a week and 5/6 a month, gents 1/-, 3/6 and10/- respectively. The Station at Haydon Bridge was 1 mile away.

The winner of the July 1906 monthly medal was Commander C V Hardcastle R.N., 96-14-82.

In 1914 the secretary was still Nicholas Beattie. There was no entry fee. Subs for gents were £1/1/0 and Ladies 10/6. There was no Sunday play.

A mixed foursome was played on Easter Monday in April 1914; J W Robinson & Miss Aikman, 85; F Thompson & Miss W Robinson, 89; H P Coning & Miss Spraggon, 91; Dr Routledge & Mrs Wardale, 91; F Scott & Miss J Carrick, 93; W Watson & Miss Watson, 98; W G Watson & Mrs Reid, 99.

Result of the Oubridge Cup played on Saturday 16 May 1914; W G Watson, 85-14-71; G A Anderson, 94-18-76; R W Thompson, 94-18-76; G A Coning, 90-12-78; H P Coning, 88-8-80. 

Result of a club match played at Bellingham in August 1914. Mr Ulric Charlton presented a silver challenge cup for annual competition between the two clubs.
