Scarborough Town Golf Club. (1902 - 1920s)

The club was founded in 1902. 

It was reported that a meeting was held at the Cambridge Hotel, Scarborough, on Friday 7 November 1902, under the presidency of Alderman Sanderson, to form a golf club to be called the Scarborough Town Golf Club. Lord Londesborough was appointed president of the club; Mr Compton Rickett, M.P., Ernest Beckett and the Mayor of Scarborough, vice-presidents; Mr J G Martin, secretary. It was decided to have separate committees for golf and tennis. The links were to be laid out on the Weaponess Estate at the foot of Oliver's Mount.

J Gaudin a native of Jersey, and professional at the Bradford Golf Club, was appointed as professional at Scarborough in February 1903. The course was originally laid out in Deepdale Valley by Harry Vardon  with Gaudin making a few alterations afterwards.

To celebrate the opening of the course in August 1903 an exhibition match was played. The competitors were; T Williamson, W C Gaudin, J H Taylor and F Beck. T Williamson (Notts) returned the best score of 75 and  won the first prize of £5; Gaudin was second and received £3; Beck scored 82 and Taylor 89. After lunch in the pavilion the course was officially opened by the Countess of Londesborough.

In 1904/5 the secretary was J G Martin, 2 Algood Street, Scarborough; entrance fee, £1/1s and subs £2/2s; ladies, 10s/6d and £1/1s; membership 250; professional course record, G Gaudin 75; amateur, J F Wilson 71.

On Saturday 13 October 1906 a replayed tie in the monthly medal was played on the Deepdale course for buttons given by the captain, Mr T Hutton. T F Wilson (+1), beat T Hope (12) by 6.&5.

The following report is from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph 11 May 1920. “At an extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of the Scarborough Golf and Lawn Tennis Co., yesterday, the resolutions for the voluntary winding-up of the company, passed at a special meeting on April 24th, were confirmed. Alderman W H Land said it was proposed to raise a sum of £10,000 to construct the new golf course. The contractors are to start operations immediately.”  

Scarborough Town Golf Club disappeared and Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club appears in the early 1920s.
