Ardsley Golf Club, Barnsley, Yorks. (1928 - WW2)
The club was formed in March 1928.
From the South Yorkshire Times Friday 6 April 1928 - "it is hoped that the new golf course at Ardsley will be available for play during the Easter holidays."
It was reported in July 1929 that the new Ardsley Golf Club were arranging an “open” competition to be played on the 27th, a modest 1 shilling was the entry fee. Entries to Mr J L Potts (secretary,) 115 Barnsley Road, Stairfoot. The medal competition was for a prize given by Dr. Blackburn.
Result of the “open” competition; A Vickers (Barnsley,) 88-18-70; J Upton (Tankersley Park,) 98-22-76; Rev. W Henwood (Ardsley,) 93-15-78; J Potts (Ardsley,) 100-22-78. The prize was presented to the winner by the president, Rev. W Henwood.

In the 1930s the secretary was J Leonard Potts, Stairfoot, Barnsley. The professional was H Burrows and the green-keeper G Walton. The club had a 9-hole course with a membership of about 100. Course records were, amateur A E Jones 36, professional H Burrows 33. Visitors’ fees were 1/6 a day and Sunday play was permitted.
In 1931 the captain was the Rev. W Henwood.
The President’s Trophy was played in December 1931. In the final G S Bunn (2) defeated W Hammerton (22) by 1 up.

At the annual meeting of the ladies’ section in May 1936 the following were elected; Captain, Miss C Wray; vice-captain, Miss M Straw; secretary, Miss Keith-Ness; asst. secretary, Mrs B Taylor, Darfield.
In 1940 the secretary was A W Lazenby, “Moorlands” Crown Hill Road, Barnsley and the green keeper G Walton. The 9-holes had a SSS of 34 and a membership of 120. Amateur course record now held by C E Baines 34. The railway station at Stairfoot was ½ mile away.

John Leonard Potts (standing behind her) was the founder and Dr Chapple (seated centre) was the president. Kneeling on extreme left is Frank Parkinson and third from left is Arthur Lazenby.
