Alderdale Golf Club, Edge Lane Course, Clayton. (1907 - 1920s)

The following is a report from the Manchester Courier & General Advertiser Friday 24 May 1907. "NEW CLUB FOR CLAYTON - twelve moths ago, owing to the expiry of the lease and non-support, the Clayton Golf Club was disbanded, to the regret of several enthusiastic players. Mr David Dickson is now energetically working for revival of interest in the game, and a large number of gentlemen signified their willingness to join a proposed new club. Land for links will probably be obtained on the Alderdale estate, owned by Councillor G W Laughton."   

Following is a report from the Manchester Courier & General Advertiser in June 1907. “NEW CLUB FOR DROYLSDEN - Since the disbandment of the old Clayton Club, golf enthusiasts in Droylsden and Clayton have been unable to participate in the sport. Owing to the exertions of Mr David Dickson of Ashton New Road, the Alderdale Club has now been launched, and subscriptions amounting to over £100 have been received. Excellent links are being laid out on land off Edge Lane, the officer’s for the first year are; Dr Craig, treasurer; D Dickson, secretary; committee – Rev A Blackburne, G W Laughton, T M Beard, Whittle, Barlow, Gaisman, Evans, C Hall, Partington and S Dreyfus”

From the Manchester Evening News Wednesday 19 June 1907. "David Dickson has at length triumphed in his effort's to found a club to take the place of the disbanded Clayton Club. The new organisation is called the Alderdale and the links are in Edge Lane, Droylsden."

It mentions in the above report that the course was to be laid out off Edge Lane. This area was the location of the former Clayton Golf Club.

The following returned the best cards in the September 1907 medal; Rev. A Blackburn, J H Hoyland, Dr. J Craig and Mr Whittle.

The best cards returned in the March 1909 medal; J H Hoyland, Rev. A Blackburn, Mr Hutton.

In the final round for James Booth's prize April 1909 the Rev. A Blackburn returned the best card. Other good scores were made by; J Turnbull, R Faulkner, jun., T Partington, J Partington, J H Hoyland and B Broadmeadow. In the first round of the ladies' competition for Dr Craig's prize Miss Larrad returned the best score.

Result of the seventh monthly medal played in August 1913; C E Woodhead, 96-24-72; W J Sproull, 97-22-76; H Sproull, 97-21-76; F R Horsfall, 95-18-77; W Stanfield, 85-6-79; J Frith, 103-24-79. 

Following are the results for the semi-finals of the Cawley Cup played in September 1913; H Sproull beat T H Hewlett on the 2oth green, and W Stanfield beat H Radford 3 and 2.

The result of the captain’s, Mr J Partington, foursome prize played in May 1914; winners - Mrs Hewlett and C E Woodhead, 83; runners-up – Miss Jarvis and Harold Sproull, 86. In the final of the gents’ competition Harold Sproull beat W Stanfield on the 21st green.

Result of the July 1914 medal; W Stansfield, 85-6-79; J Partington, 93-13-80; T H Hewlett, 96-16-80; R Keeling, 98-18-80; A Reid, 94-13-81; H Radford, 98-17-81. 

In July 1915 the Alderdale Golf Club secretary, Mr T H Hewlett, made a contribution of ten shillings on behalf of the club for “A day in a Park” a treat for thousands of children to be held in Platt Fields, Rusholme, in July and August 1915.
