Gatley Golf Club, Cheadle. (1911 – 2024)

Founded in 1911.

Nine-hole course on Waterfall Farm.

The club closed in 2024. A possibility that the land could be used for housing development but there was strong opposition to the proposal.

From the Stockport Advertiser and Guardian Friday 26 May 1911 - "A new golf club has been formed at Gatley, and play has commenced for the season on some excellent links not far from Gatley village."

The Gatley professional at the time of WW1 was James Ackerley. Sadly he was killed in action in 1917.

From the P.G.A Remembers Roll of Honour Project; Bombardier James Francis Postler Ackerley; “C” Battery 88th Battalion; Service number, 36729; Killed 1 May 1917; Age 25; Buried at Menin Road Military Cemetery; Grave number I.S.28.

Following Army Service in the First Word War Robert Leather was appointed professional to the Gatley Golf Club. He remained for seven years when he moved to the now defunct Old Manchester Golf Club in 1926. He celebrated 25 years service at Old Manchester in 1951.

In June 1931 R A Woodall, captain of the club, holed in one at the 140 yard third hole.

The third hole provided success again. In February 1936 C S Horridge holed in one at the 140 yard third hole.

The death was announced in October 1940 of John William Patterson. He had been closely associated with Gatley Golf Club almost from its foundation serving on the committee he was also a past captain.

It was reported in 1956 that Thomas Hurst, a life member of Gatley Golf Club was 90 years old. He was playing up to two years ago and the club were to hold a party for him.

Manchester Evening News Monday 28 April 1975 – “Two golfers with long connections with Gatley Golf Club have been given honorary life membership of the Manchester Alliance. They are Norman Hyde, a former Alliance captain and supporter for over forty years, and Colin Timperley, the veteran Gatley professional who cannot give the game up. He has been helping local golfers for over half a century. After serving a 10-year apprenticeship at Houldsworth he moved to Gatley and despite officially retiring a few years ago still manages to visit the club every day. He completes a “double” because last year he was also given honorary life membership of the PGA.”
