Middleton Golf Club, Manchester. (1905 -1920)

The club was founded in 1905.

Result of the third qualifying round for the captain’s prize played on Saturday 17th August 1907; F Heywood, 108-20-88; J E Miller, 109-18-91; W M Wiggins, 114-20-94; Dr T J Wheeldon, 110-15-95; G R Clark, 129-30-99. 

The second qualifying round for a bogey prize presented by Mr L Healey was played on Saturday 25th July 1908. The bogey score for the course was 78, result as follows; J H Booth (14) 2down; J Longworth (12) 5down; G R Clark (18) 6down; J E Miller (12) 7down.

At a special meeting of the club members held in September 1909 it was decided to purchase the house “Woodend” which was situated on the course, and transform it in to the clubhouse.

In 1910 the secretary was J H Booth and the professional J Eaves.

Result of the second qualifying round for the Cleworth Memorial Cup played on Saturday May 31st 1913 on the Hebers course; T Smithies, 96-18-79; F Heywood, 98-17-81; R H Jackson, 105-25-80; W H Wood, 89-8-81; J Jacques, 98-17-81; W J Howard, 101-19-82; G T Ormerod, 97-14-83; C H Mather, 93-9-84; J Ashworth, 102-18-84; J H Roberts, 109-23-86; G Matthews, 111-25-86; T F Kay, 114-22-92; J E Miller, 102-9-93; G H Richardson, 112-19-93.

The third qualifying round for the bogey competition was played at Hebers on Saturday 2nd August 1913. J E Miller and F Jacques, 3 down, both qualified in the first division. In the second division, F Hilton qualified at  2down, F Heywood and T F Kay tied at 4down.

The fourth qualifying round for the captain’s prize was played on Saturday 9th August 1913, leading two players from each division qualify; first division – F Jacques, 88-14-74; A Leeming, 89-14-75; F R Jones, 83-7-76; G T Ormerod, 91-14-77; J C Rothwell, 92-14-78; W J Howard, 95-16-79; C H Mather, 91-9-82; R M Ormerod, 94-12-82; J L Ogden, 94-12-82; W Taylor, 98-13-85; S P Ormerod, 100-15-85; J E Miller, 95-9-86; second division – F Heywood, 97-20-77; A W Morris, 100-23-77; H Hilton, 98-20-78; T F Kay, 101-22-79; H Doeg, 113-25-88.  

In 1914 secretary was J H Booth, Park Villa, Middleton and the professional J Eaves. A 9-hole course with a membership of 156. The entry fees were 10/6. Subs for gents were £1/11/0 and ladies 15/6. Visitors’ fees were 1/- a day, 3/- a week and 7/6 a month. Ladies were not permitted to play on Saturday afternoons. Sunday play was not allowed. The railway station was 15 minutes away.

The following report appeared in the Manchester Guardian in 1920. “At a dinner held at the Manchester Golf Clubhouse the council entertained the committee of the recently disbanded Middleton Golf Club, and Mr C H Mather, an ex-captain of the Middleton club, on behalf his committee and fellow-members, presented to the Manchester club the Cleworth Memorial Challenge Cup. This handsome trophy was given to the Middleton club 14 years ago by its president, the late Canon Cleworth. Mr F W Minshall, the Manchester captain, in accepting the cup, expressed the thanks of himself and fellow-members for the generous and sportsmanlike gift.”
