Armathwaite Golf Club, Cumberland. (1907 - WW1)

The club was founded in 1907.

Report from the Carlisle Journal Friday 16 April 1909 - "The new golf course at Armathwaite, on which there have been competitions this week, is about 15 minutes walk from the railway station. It is on the left bank of the river, and is in the midst of as picturesque scenery as is to  be found in the beautiful valley of the Eden. The land covered contains some nice velvety grass, and the greens are in fair condition, a good deal of attention having been bestowed upon them. Mr Fraser Sandeman and Mr C R Turner have taken a prominent part in forming the course, which is one of 18-holes." 

From the 1914 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; Armathwaite Golf Club, Cumberland; secretary was F Sandeman; professional and green-keeper, J R Richardson, who had been at the club since 1911; 14-hole course with a bogey score of 76 and a membership of 70; There was no entry fee. Subs were £2/2/0; Visitors’ fees were 2/- a day and 10/- a week. If visitors were staying at local hotels they paid 1/6 a day and 7/6 a week. Sunday play was allowed without caddies; The station was 7 minutes (½ mile) away.
