The 18-hole parkland course was designed by Chris Court who used the natural contours of the land in his layout. He included the many mature trees and hedges, where possible, as well as adding a further 2,000 trees, water hazards were also a prominent feature. The course was a good test of golf and could be enjoyed by both experienced golfers and new starters. The signature hole was the twelfth, a 512 yard par 5 with three water hazards and an island green.

The club was started by business partners John Ross and Martin Turner. Prior to the golf course the land had been used for farming. The laying out of the course began in 1991, the area once occupied by the farm buildings was developed and the clubhouse was completed in the mid 1990s.

Charnock Richard played their first Preston & District league match against Longridge Golf Club on the 23 May 2001. The match ended all square. Charnock team; L Taylor, captain (3), J Madden (14), I Jones (13), W Sum (9), M Ackers (10), M Worthington (11), N Bateman (10), N Cornwell (16), P Briscoe (14) and K Wheable (11).

In 2002 the secretary was Lee Taylor and the professional Gareth Roper. Club membership was 550.

It was announced that the course would be closed with immediate effect in August 2013. The members and staff at the golf club were bitterly disappointed at the announcement. It was hoped that the members would be able to at least complete their golfing season but this was not to be.

Director of Golf at Charnock Richard was Alan Lunt who had been at the club for twelve years. The President was John Sinclair.

In 2013 Wigan Athletic Football Club planned to buy the land to develop a training facility and football academy, but this never materialised.

In April 2018 a new club called The Laurels opened a nine-hole pay and play course on the site. It was hoped to extend the course to eighteen-holes.
