Warren Farm Golf Course, Streatley. (1890s)
Nine-hole private course laid out by Tom Dunn for Frederick Thomas Shoolbred.
From the Golfer’s Guide 1895; “Goring – In the month of January – when all other folk were safe in bed or else on the ice – indefatigable Tom Dunn was attending to the interests of the Royal and Ancient game, and laid out a 9-hole course on the estate of Mr F Shoolbred, at Goring (Oxon).”
Thanks to Mike Morrison who provided the following additional information – “In 1895 Tom Dunn visited two sites in the vicinity of the villages of Goring and Streatley in Berkshire. Frederick Shoolbred, who owned a large furniture and drapery department store in Tottenham Court Road, commissioned Dunn to create a nine-hole course on his private estate at Warren Farm in January 1895. A month later, the current Goring and Streatley Golf Club engaged Dunn to create another nine-hole course on the next hillside. It is alleged Shoolbred was not invited to become a member of the new club because he was “in trade”.
The Ordnance Survey Map below is from the 1890/1900s and shows Warren Farm (golf course not marked).
Interesting that the golf course is marked on the pre-WW1 O.S. Map below.
