Harry Vardon was in fine form at the opening of the Romney Sands course on Saturday 23 July 1904. Following is the result of the four-ball foursome; Harry Vardon and Peter Paxton; Out - 4,4,4,4,2,4,3,2,4 = 31; Home - 4,4,4,5,5,4,4,3,4 = 37- total 68. Jones and James Paxton; Out - 4,4,5,4,3,3,3,3,4 = 33; Home - 5,6,3,4,6,4,4,3,4 = 39 - total 72.
An Open Amateur competition took place in November 1904. The London Daily stated that the course "now ranks among the best on the Kentish coast." The medal-play competition took place in the morning and was won by Rev S T Ricketts (Bexhill), 90-8-82. The high scoring in the bogey competition was attributed to the early darkness, half the players were unable to complete their round. Result; H F Overbury (5), 4down.
The following is from the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; Instituted 1903; Hon. Secs. - A W Cook, 74 Cheapside, E.C, and W F G Nichols, Marine Parade, Littlestone-on-Sea; Captain, H Finn; 18-holes; Subs - £2/2s, Ladies £1/1s, Foreign, 10s/6d; Professional J Paxton; Visitors' fees; 2s/6d a day, 7/6 a week and £1/1s a month. The course is laid out on land reclaimed from the sea, and the soil is especially adapted for golf. It is of good length, with natural hazards, consisting of sand bunkers and sand dunes, and the wonderful improvement that has taken place in the turf and greens since the club was opened augurs well for the future. Bogey 80. Length about three and a half miles.
A brief existence, the Romney Sands club had disappeared by 1907. It became Greatstone Golf Club, also now defunct (see separate listing).
