Shrub Hill Golf Club, Whitstable, Kent. (1924 - WW2)

Shrub Hill Golf Club was founded in April 1924.

The pioneer was a local builder named George Reeves. He employed  James Braid  and Abe Mitchell to design the course.

In 1925 the secretary was G Reeves, Chestfield Manor Offices, 15 High Street, Whistable, telephone 167. The professional was B Darby. An 18-hole course. Visitors’ fees were 2/- a round and 3/- a day. There were stations at Whitstable 1 ¼ miles and Herne Bay 2 miles.

In 1926 the secretary was J L Thomson, 24 Tankerton Road, Whitstable and the greenkeeper H Keam. Course records were, amateur 77 and professional 68.

In 1930 the secretary was J L Thomson, 24 Tankerton Road, Whitstable the professional was B Darby and the greenkeeper C R Cooke. Course records, amateur G Macdonald 71, professional A J Coleman 71. 18 holes with a membership of 220. Visitors’ fees were 2/- a day, 3/- at weekend and Bank Holiday. Local hotels were the Tankerton and the Marine.

In May 1930 Miss Wanda Morgan of Shrub Hill Golf Club won the Kent championship at Rochester by beating Miss Butler (Folkestone) by 2&1. Wanda Morgan went on to have a very successful golfing career.

Just prior to WW2 the club was purchased by millionaire ship owner Jack Billmeir. He died in 1963 and the course and buildings were acquired by the members.

Shrubhill Golf Club disappeared at the time of WW2 and the current Chestfield Golf Club appears.
