The Aircraft Manufacturing Company Golf Course (Airco), Hendon. (ww1)
The Aircraft Manufacturing Company (Airco) had a six-hole course on land at London Aerodrome, Hendon, during WW1.
Airco moved to Hendon just before the First World War, taking over a bus garage and leasing London (Hendon) Aerodrome. Airco produced thousands of aircraft for the military during WW1, its chief designer was Geoffrey de Haviland. In 1918 it was advertised as the largest aircraft company in the world. Lack of interest in aviation together with lack of government support following the war meant the company soon became unprofitable. It was sold to Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) in 1920.
Both The London Flying Club Golf Club and Colindale Golf Club used the Aerodrome for their courses. See separate entry on this website for both of these defunct clubs/courses.
