Windlesham Moor Golf Course, Surrey. (1929 - WW2)
The course first appeared in 1929.
The private nine-hole course was designed by Tom Simpson. The course included replica features such as the Pandy (Pandemoniun) bunker from Musselburgh.
Following is an extract from an article written by Bernard Darwin for © Country Life in November 1929. The images accompanied the article:-
“GOLF IN MINATURE – The happy owner of this nine-hole course is Mr William Clarke, and it is in his garden at Windlesham Moor, not far from Sunningdale. Its artistic and remorseless creator is Mr T Simpson, who as a really diabolic genius for this kind of thing. A few weeks ago there was a pleasant and informal opening of the course, which I played my part. There was a number of not incompetent pitchers and putters there, but they were all perfectly resigned beforehand to the fact that Miss Wetherhead would win the medal round with which the fun began. And, sure enough, she did win it, with a score of 28.
Photographs of golf courses, large or small, are never entirely satisfactory, but theses do, I think, give some notion of the course and show that it is, apart from its playing merits, very attractive in itself.
Perhaps it would be interesting to give the precise lengths of the holes. Here they are in yards; 52,55,38,50,25,25,52,58,44. There is a local rule peculiar to the course, namely, that the tee shot at holes 1,3,6,7 and 9 must be played with a putter. Any club may be taken for the other four tee shots and any club may be used through the green at any hole. The ordinary mortal will be satisfied with two clubs, a mashie-niblick and a putter.”
