Redhill and Reigate Golf Club, Eearlswood Common. (1887 – 2019)
The club was founded in 1887.
The original nine-hole course on Earlswood Common was laid out by Peter Paxton. It was extended to 14-holes in 1890 and to 18-holes in 1892. In 1910 the course was entirely redesigned by James Braid.
It was reported in January 2019 that Surrey’s second oldest golf club would be closing after 130 years.
Redhill and Reigate Golf Club in Pendleton Road, Redhill, had struggled to survive for almost two decades. Finally the owners of the club had decided to “thrown in the towel” and it would close at the end of March 2019.
The clubhouse, which was privately owned and a separate entity, would continue to operate as a venue.
Club chairman Tony Hallett said: "I and the trustees appreciate all the help and support the council has given over several years whilst we have kept the club open in adverse trading conditions.
“Sadly, the club is no longer financially viable and the time has come to accept our combined efforts have been in vain and the club must close. Relations between the club and the council remain very positive and it is to be hoped they ultimately succeed in finding a long-term solution that will enable golf to return to the site. I'd also like to express my thanks to staff and members of the club for their support and understanding."
