Headley Park Golf Course, Surrey. (1912 – 1940s)

Private course laid out by James Braid in 1912.

From James Braid and his Four Hundred Golf Courses by John F Moreton and Iain Cumming; “On a silver salver owned by the Braid family, are the words “This is presented by J Newton Mappin to James Braid in acknowledgement of the successful way he planned and laid out Headley Park Golf Course.”

The private course no longer exists, it lasted till the late 1940s, but was situated on undulating on the Headley Park Estate. It seems a tight course on limited acreage and may have been a six hole rather than a nine hole course, though, would this justify a salver? Mappin, by the way, is part of Mappin and Webb. The first tee and last green have been identified, the first appearing to be a par three, the last a par four. The Mappin Family lived at Headley Park and the three males were all members of Walton Heath. The family held a Royal Warrant as silversmiths and, hence, the salver given to Braid is impressive, hallmarked London, dated 1912.”
