Worthing Golf Club, Lychpole Course. (1890s)
The first nine-hole course of the Worthing Golf Club had a short life. Exact closure date unknown.
The course was at Lychpole, a remote area on the Sussex Downs about three miles from Worthing and two miles from Lancing. It would have been an arduous walk, a little easier by horse and carriage.
The brief appearance was in part due to a misunderstanding regarding the lease on the land.
Below is a report on the first club from 1892. It’s interesting to note the location as being “upon the Downs at Leechpool, near Sompting.”
Problems with the lease in October 1892.
Result of the first competition played in October 1892.
Result of the second monthly competition played in December 1892.
Results from the spring meeting held in April 1893.
Ordnance Survey Map below shows the remote Lychpool Farm in the late 1890s. The club had ceased to exist by this time.
