Silton Private Golf Course. (1920/30s)

Thanks to David Thomas for informing us of this fascinating Private Golf Course. A great insight into a largely forgotten area of golf played in the early part of the twentieth century.

David has been a great help with research into lost Dorset golf courses.

"The Silton course was laid out on land belonging to the Harris family and would  previously have been used as farmland, there would have been the usual natural hazards; hedges, ditches, trees, roads etc. The course would have been used  by family, friends and guests. The course at Silton was in use following WW1.

Thankfully a few remnants still remain. The pathway to the first tee can still be seen, though overgrown. In one of the barns, a row of lockers used by the golfers of yesteryear are still in situ. This tithe barn was referred to by the recent residents as the "Golf Room."

Silton was also known as Shaftesbury & Gillingham.

If anyone has any further information regarding this course please "Contact Us" via the website homepage.

The Google Map below shows the location of the former course.
