Saumarez Park Private Golf Course, Guernsey. (1890s)
In the 1890s the property was owned by Baron James Saumarez, the British Ambassador to Japan. Following his death in 1937 the park was acquired by the States of Guernsey.
It is recorded that in November 1894 Old Tom Morris, then aged 73, visited the island to lay out the course of the Royal Guernsey Golf Club. It is understood that whilst on the island he paid a visit to Saumarez to lay out a sporting nine-hole course for Lord de Saumarez. What a tantalizing snippet.
Saumarez Park is now the largest public park on Guernsey. There is a nature trail for walkers and the park is used by families for picnics. The magnificent camellias and magnolias, originally planted by the diplomat, are still admired in the public park and gardens.
The large manor house is now a residential care home.
