Southwood Golf Club, Farnborough. (1976 – 2018)

The club was founded in 1976.

The original nine-hole pay as you play parkland course opened in 1977.

In 1988 further land was obtained and architects Charles Hawtree and Son were appointed to lay out the new 18-hole course. The course opened in 1988 with a celebrity match between comedy actors James Bolam and Terry Scott. 

It was reported in October 2018 that the club would be closing due to the management company, Mack Golf, going into liquidation. The Southwood club was due to close anyway in March 2019 with the local council intending to develop the land for housing.

In the early 1980s the club had a membership of 350. The professional and secretary was Bob Hammond. The nine-holes measured 2.085 metres with a SSS of 32. Visitors’ fees; £1.75p, O.A.P., 75p.

In 1988 and the early 1990s the new 5,553 yard 18-hole course had been laid out. The cub had a membership of 500. The secretary and professional was still Bob Hammond. Visitors’ fees; £5, O.A.P., £2.50.  Professional course record – M Fagan, 64.

In the mid 1990s the professional was Bob Hammond. The course measured 5,738 yards with a SSS of 68. Green fee; weekdays , £11.50, weekend, £14.50.

In 2004/5 the professional was Matt Robbins. The later professional was Chris Hudson.
