Below is the result of a match played at Royal Winchester Golf Club on Tuesday 11 March 1902.

On Saturday 20 February 1909 the College played a match at Woking the home team winning 6 to 5. For Winchester, 15 year old Geoffrey Hawkins (pictured below,) went round in 84.

In 1914 the secretary was A W Henderson and the professional W J Simons (1904 to 1921). There were two 9-hole courses with a membership of 160. The entry fee was 2/6 and the subs 10/- per half year. There was no play during summer term. Visitors, only Wykehamists and old Wykehamists were allowed to play. Sunday play was not allowed.

Thanks to Suzanne Foster, Archivist at Winchester College, for the images below, and for the following text; “The first reference to golf at Winchester College appears in our school magazine in December 1890 and comments on boys using half day holidays to play “golf on the school links near first pot” and by 1891 a more formal club was formed. I’ve also attached a sketch plan of the college environs from 1848 as this shows the location of First Pot at the foot of St Catherine’

“I also have papers here which suggest that before the school moved to using the golf course at Hockley in the 1920s, there was another course on the west side of the Winchester – Southampton road on the left of the entrance to Bushfield Camp on the edge of Winchester. This was closed at the start of the First World War and never re-opened because of the better facilities available at Hockley. I think this must be the course on Compton Down to which you refer”
