Founded in 1896.
In 1897/8 the professional was F P Wilde.
The president of the club in 1898 was R T Combe.
The first monthly medal for the club was played on Saturday 19 March 1898, result; C Cargill, 118-40-78; Jas Taylor, 133-50-83; F J Helliar, 133-50-83; F P Wilde, 106-15-91; S M Morley, 109-15-94; A F Robertson, 122-25-97. Several others competed who were over 100, or sent in no returns.

In 1906 a course of 9-holes laid out on the north side of Herne Hill about one mile out of town. Visitors’ fees on introduction were 1/- a day, 2/6 a week and 5/- a month. The station at Ilminster was 5 minutes away. Local hotel was the George.

In 1914 the secretary was J Duke, Solicitor. There was a membership of only 16. Entry fees were 10/6 and subs £1/1/0. Visitors were allowed two consecutive days in any one year free then, 1/- a day, 2/6 a week, 5/- a month.
