From the same newspaper as above the unfortunate loss for the Reverend gives us a bit of a clue to the location of the golf course.
“Lost on the Stapleford Golf Links, between Steeple Langford and Berwick St James, a silver hunter watch and chain, with gold medal and trinkets attached. Anyone returning to the Rev. G Hext, Steeple Langford, will be rewarded.”
Entry from the 1896-97 Golfing Annual - Stapleford Golf Club, Instituted 1887. The course of eighteen-holes is situated on Stapleford Downs. The nearest station at Wishford (Great Western Railway) is three miles from the green.
In 1902 it was listed as having an 18-hole course.
Ordnance Survey Map from the 1890/1900s showing Stapleford Down.
The club disappeared before WW1.
