Clontarf Golf Club, Dublin. (1912 - 1921)

Early mention of a course from an advert that appeared in the Dublin Daily Express Saturday 22 June 1907 - "To Let, Furnished, 1 Seapoint Terrace, Clontarf, near golf links, boat club and tram stops at door, moderate terms."

The club was founded in 1912 and situated in the Mount Temple grounds.

Most of the credit in the setting up of the club should go to Dr. John Love Morrow a Presbyterian Minister who had moved to the Clontarf district in 1890. He was a first class golfer with a plus handicap he had always hoped to set up a golf club for Clontarf. He had also been hon. secretary of the Golfing Union of Ireland since 1901.

The entrance to the course and clubhouse was on the Howth Road a short walk from the now closed Clontarf railway station.

The first meeting was held in Clontarf Town Hall in January 1912, amongst those present; Rev. J L Morrow, Rev. J Hickey, Rev. P J Ryan, Rev. J O’Connell. The following officers were elected; president, J L Morrow; captain, J Macnie; hon. secretary, J J Moore.

Mr Picton Bradshaw leased his ground at Mount Temple for the nine-hole course. The opening of the course, by the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen, took place on Saturday 25 May 1912.

Problems with retaining the lease of the land at Mount Temple led to the club’s move to its present location at Donneycarney House in 1921.
