Nenagh Golf Club, Co Tipperary. (1892 - 1929)

The club was founded in 1892.

It seems that the club may have played at three different locations prior to the move to the current course.

In the Limerick Chronicle in September 1892 mention is made of two gentlemen, A MacLeod, Nenagh and Capt. Waring R.N., Nenagh, who played in a competition at Kilkee.

Match against Roscrea in November 1894.

From The Sportsmans Holiday Guide 1897. “The Nenagh Golf Club have a sporting nine-hole course close to the town. The amateur record of the green is 45 which gives a pretty fair idea of the difficulties that the golfer has to contend against here. The course is only in its infancy as yet, having been formed as recently as 1892.”

In the Golfing Annual of 1907/08 it was stated that the club had a new course one and a half miles from the railway station.

The club went into abeyance at the time of WW1.

The following is from the Irish Field February 20th 1920. “A letter from the Nenagh Golf Club to the Golfing Union or Ireland stated that they had been obliged to give their course for cultivation during the war but were now able to resume, having secured suitable ground. It was unanimously decided that Nenagh be reinstated as an affiliated club.”

The current Nenagh Golf Club was Founded/Affiliated in 1929.

The Google Map below shows the Railway Station. This was listed as being a quarter of a mile from the golf course in the 1905 Nisbet’s Yearbook entry. If anyone can help with the location of the earlier courses please “Contact Us” through the website homepage.
