Queen’s County Golf Club, Heath, Co. Laois. (1889 - 1931)

The Queen’s County Heath Golf Club first appeared in November 1889.

The current Heath Golf Club (Portlaoise), was instituted in 1930. The original club, Queen’s County Heath Golf Club dates back to November 1889, making it the seventh oldest golf club in Ireland.

A trophy which has come into the possession of the present club was played for in 1891 and bears the inscription “Queens County Heath Golf Club.”

Report from the Irish Times on Tuesday 21st July 1891. “The Queens County Heath Club at “Maryboro” formed during the winter of 1889, gives every promise of being a great success, certainly the members may congratulate upon having links which, old golfers say, are second to none, embracing as they do a variety of holes of modulating ground with hazards and bunkers. The member meet for play every Friday, and the “Stand House” fitted up luxuriously by the officers of the 4th Leinster Regiment, has been very kindly placed at the disposal of the members.”
From the Golfing Annual 1892/93; President; The Earl of Portarlington; Captain, Colonel Cosby; Hon. Secretary, Captain H. Armstrong, Rathleash House, Portarlington.

Description of the course from the Golfing Annual 1894/95; There is an excellent clubhouse, originally the Grandstand, when races were held on The Heath.”

The club continued to be included in the Golfing Annual and in 1910 the secretary was listed as the Rev. J J Kearney.

The Maryboro Golf Club appears in the Irish Golf Guide from 1910 to 1916. It states that the Rev J J Kearney was captain and Richard Ball, Rockview, was hon. secretary.

It seems that the club went into abeyance at the time of WW1.

The present Heath Golf Club (Portlaoise) was instituted in 1930.

The current clubhouse, located in exactly the same position as the old Grand Stand of 1889, was rebuilt in 1991 and was officially opened in August 1992.
