Glen of the Downs Golf Club, County Wicklow. (1998 – 2017)
Founded in 1998 the 18-hole parkland course measured 6,443 yards from the back tees. The course was designed by Peter McEvoy to USGA specifications. Among its features was a five-tier double green which was shared by the 8th and 10th holes. In between, was a lovely par five – the 9th, which measured 500 yards from the back tee.
With its natural slopes and valleys combined with McEvoy’s trademark undulating greens and some 90 bunkers. There were magnificent panoramic views of the Wicklow Mountains and the Irish Sea, McEvoy claimed, ‘the views made this site a designer’s dream.’
The golf club went into liquidation in 2017. The following message was posted by club members – “We have been informed by the Directors of Glen of the Down plc that with immediate effect the company is going into liquidation. As from this evening, 16 January, there will be no access to the Club until further notice.”
