Owner Joe McDonald said in December 2005: "I just can't keep on going. It's not financially viable any longer. The place will shut when I run out of money and that will be very soon. No one wants to play nine-hole courses any more. The big clubs are offering too many good deals on green fees, and also I can't get enough new members. I couldn't afford to extend to 18 holes and green fee income has been diabolical over the last few years.”
The Vartry Lakes Golf Club was listed in the 2006 Golfer’s Handbook.
