Wishaw Golf Club, Lanarkshire. (1894 - 1935)

Founded in 1894 the first course was laid out at Greenhead. In 1897 the club moved to a course at Craigneuk, the course was to the west of Gateside Road. It moved to its current location in 1935.

It was reported in April 1896 that a proposal had been put forward to resuscitate the Wishaw Golf Club. It was thought that if ground on the Deer Park on Wishaw Estate was made available it would make an excellent course.

Following is the result of the first monthly handicap played by the lady member in April 1897; Miss Morton, 94; Miss Archibald, 95. The next lowest scores were made by; Miss M Wright, Miss Rankin, Miss Eleanor Morton, Miss Chrissie Pettigrew,

At the AGM in February 1924 the following officers were elected; Hon Presidents, Lord Belhaven and Stenton and Dr Duff; president, Joseph Ingram; vice-president, Mr R S Anderson; captain, Wm Wilson; vice captain, W McKay; secretary, Robert Ingram; match secretary, Thos McQueen; treasurer, T S Haran. Many improvements had been made to the course including extra yardage were possible and additional hazards. The course was now 18 holes again after re-claiming the land that was ploughed up during the war. The greens were as always first class and true, with their renowned humps and hollows there is hardly a level put.

Result of match played at Bellshill on Saturday 31st May 1924. Although the score was heavily in favour of the home side many of the games were close, several reaching the 18th. After tea a foursomes match was played.

Also in May 1924 final of the monthly competitions; Wm Wilson (7), 72; B Bell (9), 72; Gavin Cowper (12), 72; J McNamee (17), 72. Mixed foursome competition; Miss Isa Henderson and J M Dick (27), 83; Miss Adams and H McQueen (17), 84.

In September 1924 a mixed foursome was played with prizes given by Mr R S Anderson the vice-president; winners, Miss Johnstone and W Wilson; runners-up, Miss McKenzie and J Davidson. The first prizes were cases of silver spoons and the runners-up received respectively a manicure set and a safety razor outfit. Mrs Anderson presented the prizes at the end of play.

From the 1933 Golfer’s Handbook; Secretary – T S Haran, Solicitor, 75 Main Street, Wishaw; Green-keeper, W McIlraith; Eighteen-holes; Visitors, 1s/6d a day, 5s a week. No Sunday play.

It was reported in December 1934 that the club would shortly be moving to a new course which was designed by James Braid.
