Gortan Golf Course, Bruichladdich, Islay. (1920/30s)

Below is a report on the new nine-hole course in 1929.

Oban Times and Argyllshire Advertiser Saturday 2 November 1929; “KILCHOMAN – Much interest was aroused in the Kilchoman district of Islay by the opening of a new nine-hole golf course at Gortan, Bruichladdich. Those present included Mr Hugh Morrison M.P., of Islay House. The course was officially opened by Mr William Walker, of Foreland, President of the club. Mr Walker then drove off the first ball with a silver mounted driver, presented by Mr David Hampton, and handed over by Mr Alex Hampton. The tit-bit of the afternoon was an exhibition round by four well known players; Messrs. W White, S Morrison, W MacIntyre and P Latimer. Accompanied by an enthusiastic gallery, the players gave an excellent demonstration of their ability. Despite a high wind the scores returned were; W MacIntyre, 87-6-81; S Morrison, 84-2-82; P Latimer, 93-10-83; W White, 90 scratch. The prixe for the lowest score, a travelling clock, given and presented by Mrs Walker, was won by Mr MacIntyre. The prize winners in a nine-hole competition which followed were; Gilbert McNabb, Portnhaven, 48-9-39; Angus White, Machrie, 42-240; Eric O’Mahony, Bowmore, 45-5-40.”

From the Oban Times and Argyllshire Advertiser Saturday 14 June 1930 - "An Islay Temperance Hotel - This establishment, situated at Bruichladdich, is situated within a few minutes of the pier, and is near Gortan golf course. Boating, bathing and sea fishing available."

Hopefully we may be able to add more to the story, at least it’s recorded.
